Refugee Week 2020 14th - 20th June & World refugee day 20th June , 2020: Celebrating the Year of Welcome
During refugee week Surf Coast Rural Australians for Refugees along with Torquay community House and many other organisations will share stories, videos, songs and poems of refugees, on social media providing a unique opportunity for us to reflect and celebrate the rich diversity refugees bring to Australia.
We will be asking everyone to share these stories from the people that our Government is keeping locked up and denying a permanent future. This way the community can start to see for themselves that these people just have the same needs as all of us.
No matter who we are or where we come from, we all want the same things in life – to be safe and to be able to live a free and dignified life.
For seven long years people who simply came here looking for safety and chance for a better life, have been detained in off-shore camps or here in immigration detention and some men are currently held in the Mantra Hotel in Melbourne in cramped conditions. They have been demonized by politicians like Peter Dutton, but they are people just like you and me.
We should not let politicians get away with trying to divide us against each other. We need to reject racism in all its forms and recognize that we are all in this world together.
We are at our best when we treat each other with respect and compassion. After seven years of this cruel and indefinite detention, it’s time for the Morrison Government to do the right thing and let these people, move into the community with their friends and families so they can finally start to rebuild their lives in safety.
If you think it’s time to look to the future where we welcome Refugees and embrace humanity so our children can proudly say we are a fair and compassionate nation, then please join us on World Refugee Day the 20th June and place a sign on your car, your letterbox or fence in Solidarity for those seeking asylum and those held in detention here in Australia and off shore.
